About

I am a photo-turned-video journalist currently based in Dakar, Senegal. Though I still shoot the occasional motionless picture, I feel most effective in the medium of video – where I have the narrative control I lacked as a photojournalist and the visual expression not afforded to most reporters (for which I gave up my beat in the first place).

I took a risk at the height of uncertainty in the industry and left a great staff job to attend the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism. Though I do miss the stability, I have no regrets. I began my freelance career in ’10 and have since published in The New York Times.

I am functional in French, learning some Wolof (the predominant language of Senegal), and I will be living in and covering West Africa for the foreseeable future.
